Courtney and Joe kept saying, “Mom and Dad, why don’t
you move closer to us in Las Lomas?” Finally after much thought,
Ken and Marilyn gave in. Living closer meant building again, moving
after 32 years, and so on… The more we thought about it, put
pencil to paper, juices flowed, and the more we liked the
idea of living in a rural area again, as Carmel Valley was becoming
much less rural.
We
wanted the house to reflect on what we both enjoyed most;
the glow of the sun in the morning, pastoral views, strawberry
fields, horse pastures, distant hills with Fremont Peak
in the background capturing a setting suns’ glow
in the early evening. So they said, “that’s
what we want to see!” With that as the focus, the
house and predominate fenestration, must orient to capture
the above.
The
house is small by today’s standards, 1090 square
feet, two bedrooms, one bath, but Ken and Marilyn wanted
their new home to reflect that of a cottage of days gone
by, that would embrace a more relaxed life style. The
house is placed in an open field slightly elevated on
a grass terrace overlooking a green in spring, golden
in fall, field which wraps around the terrace and house
from East to South. So it was, position the house to
the views with its back to the afternoon winds thereby
sheltering the terrace and outdoor living potential.
A
point of note, an excellent Contractor is a very important
ingredient when an Architect and his wife build their
own home. Thanks to Wayne Wood Construction and his well-chosen
crew of sub-contractors provided Ken and Marilyn with
their cottage they are proud to call home. |
